Gurgles were unheard of until one day they just seemed to have appeared. No one has any idea of where they came from. Legends say that they came from the center of the world. Professor Yulai thinks that this could explain why their skin is extremly warm.

Gurgles were named for the gentle sound they make when they are agitated, which sounds like water gurgling. Whether or not they literally came from earth, they have an uncanny ability to discern very old footprints that would not be visible to anyone else. Their skin is very warm, and they need to keep cool, so they like to stay near water. 80% of the world's gurgles, the Green Gurgles, live in the forest, but in the Arctic region one can find White Gurgles. It is thought that a group of gurgles migrated north long ago to find a climate where they would stay cool all winter long. The bottoms of their paws have a slight ridge, which the arctic gurgles dip in water, let ice over. This allows them to move as if on makeshift ice-skates. Gurgles grow to different sizes, depending on the habitat, but generally fall into the range between 3 and 4 feet tall and the largest gurgle ever weighed was just under 50 lbs.

Gurgles have what looks like a "hitchhiker's thumb, " and indeed it allows them to catch rides--on long, limber tree branches. They wrap the branches around their thumbs and use them to swing between the trees. They dislike walking, because the same ridge that enables their Arctic relatives to glide across ice with ease, makes it difficult for the forest Gurgles to cross long distances on foot. They often have problems with balancing, and seem clumsy without an adequate habitat.

They make loyal, if mischevous, pets. The pet-owner's greatest challenge will be to keep them out of the refridgerator. They will try to sneak in the fridge to stay cool, and with a Gurgle in the house, the owners may often find their ice-cream mysteriously gone...

When gurgles are angry or provoked, they can regulate their body temperature to become boiling hot. Steam will literally come out of their ears, and they can burn their enemies, when threatened. After a battle they need an extra-long cooling period.
