| The Arctic is a loosely connected chain of archipelagos, and several islands boast unique fauna. Pengpets are small creatures that come from the Easternmost artic island, Aurora. The island is small, and you won't find much aside from penget colonies and the rare-blooming arctic cactus there. Aurora is connected by an ice reef to a neighbouring island, Nix, which is home to their relatives, the Purguins. The Pengpets and the Purguins are sibling species who share both a habitat and a close bond. The smaller Pengets need the larger Purguins to live through the early years, and in return the Pengpets herd schools of fish to the cape off the island Nix, so that the Purguins are never hungry. Pengpet eggs are almost the size of the adult pengets (which is not very large, barely three feet at the shoulder and between 40 and 60 lbs, depending on the season--during the winter the Pengpets are chubby due to the deposits of fat they store up throughout the summer, to help them keep warm. Baby pengets have very large heads, but as adults their body becomes proportional, and they turn from clumsy into graceful creatures, who perform the famous ice dances at the beginning of the arctic summer.
Pengpets have giant blue eyes, that have natural sunshades, which prevent them from going blind when the low sun rays reflect on the snow and on ice. The sunshades are second lids, of sorts, that lower as a thin sheen to protect the pengpets from sun damage. The sunshades must be maintained, and if they are damaged, they can be regrown with the juice of the arctic cactus.
On very cold days, Pengpets huddle up together to keep warm, rotating between the outer edges of the circular formation and the center, where maximum warmth is to be found. Perhaps due to dependence on their relative for survival, Pengets are incredibly loyal. They will help each other, even at cost and danger to themselves. They are communal creatures, but their loyal devotion extends to their owners. When treated right, they flourish, and associated with financial gain; at the Witch Market in Monoville, artisans sell talismans made from Penget feathers that are rumored to attract money and wealth.
