| Purguins were originally discovered on Aurora, the island where Pengpets were known to live, but later it turned out that Purguins live on a neighbouring island, Nix, connected to Aurora by an ice reef. Purguins are related to pengpets, and treat pengpets as little siblings; sometimes gently teasing them, but usually helping them in any way they can. Purguins are primarily sea creatures, with a split fin that can function as makeshift legs for short distances, but serves them better in the ocean. In fact, when on land, Purguins usually glide across the snow on their white bellies. Their wings have evolved into flipper-paws, useless for flight--a skill their ancestors once possessed. However, they are quick swimmers in the water, with a keen sense of currents and the ever-changing underwater geography. They are larger than the small Pengpets, reaching four and a half feet in length, and almost 70 lbs in weight, but they also have fluctuating fat deposits for energy and warmth, depending on the season.
Purguins have beautiful purple fur, said to be that way as an adaptation to the ultraviolet rays of the low arctic sun. The bellies are belived to be white because they are rarely exposed to the sun, as Purguins use them as built-in travel slides. Their fur is water-resistant, so they can alternate between swimming and resting on land, without ever freezing.
Purguins communicate through a code of short and long whistles to alert others to danger, or to invite them to join a meal. They also have a melodic greeting that is sung to baby purguins when it's time for the babies to hatch out of the eggs. Purguins are not afraid of people and frequently befriend Arctic Wanderers and scientists. Since contact was first made with purguins, they have shown great interest in human clothing, occasionally stealing some to wear while on land, or making imitation belts and scarves with seaweed.
Purguins are superstitious and will not undertake any journey across the ice reef, unless they feel the stars and the tides are in alignment, and unless the moon is brand new or waxing. They consider harvest moon to be a very bad omen.
